Freedom For "Bomber" Brown

Release Date: 28 July 2010

Councillors in Sandwell have unanimously backed a plan to make Albion legend Tony "Bomber" Brown an honorary freeman of the borough.

Tony, who now lives in Walsall, is the club's record goalscorer netting 218 goals  in 574 appearances. His career spanned 17 years.

The full council last night(Tues)approved the plan which was the idea of Council Leader Darren Cooper.

A report to councillors said Tony had made significant achievements during his career with West Bromwich Albion  and had maintained strong links with and promoted and supported Sandwell both in community activities and other charitable functions.

Tony will be the second former Albion player to be given the honour.

In 2004, former Baggies' favourite Cyrille Regis was made a freeman along with comedian Chris Collins(Frank Skinner) and Smethwick-born actress Julie Walters.

Cllr Cooper said: "Tony is a legend and as a player brought joy to thousands of residents of Sandwell for nearly two decades.

"He is a worthy recipient of this honour."

It is hoped the ceremony can take place in September.
