Youngsters Set To Join Anti-Litter CCTV Campaign

Release Date: 5 January 2009

School children are set to become the voice of a new CCTV campaign to wage war on litterbugs in West Bromwich town centre.

Pupils from Ryders Green Primary school, Sumreet Hampal and Abida Akhtar with WardensA competition has been launched inviting pupils to record messages which will be played to people caught on camera as they drop litter.

The scheme is being co-ordinated by local charity Tipton Litterwatch.

The competition aims to support Sandwell's 'Zero Tolerance on Litter' campaign and the work of Sandwell wardens on the frontline to combat the blight of litter.

Messages could include, 'a £75 fine is pretty hard to swallow', 'a £75 fine will burn a hole in your pocket', or 'dropping litter will cost you £75 a pop'.

Sandwell Homes will also be providing prizes for the lucky winners whose voices are selected.

Cllr Mahboob Hussain, Sandwell's cabinet member for neighbourhoods and housing, said: "This is a great idea to get children involved in the fight against litter.

"Children in Sandwell are setting a magnificent example and are our best ambassadors in terms of getting positive environmental messages out there."

Competition entrants should submit a CD recording of themselves saying the Tipton Litterwatch slogans. The winners will be decided in January by a panel of judges.

Judges are looking for expression, authority and personality in the recordings.
