Interpreters' Services

The Council is committed to the provision of quality services to all of the people of Sandwell and can arrange to provide interpretation services to residents where language barriers create difficulty in accessing Sandwell Council's "front line" services.

What is the difference between interpretation and translation?

Interpreting is decoding information from one language to another orally (word of mouth).

Translating is decoding information from one language to the other language in writing.

How can we help with interpreting?

We can help break down communication barriers for Sandwell residents whose first language of communication in not English. Residents calling at Council buildings to discuss services required can be assisted through the Council’s Corporate Bilingual Scheme (CBS).

This scheme provides an ‘initial contact and sign posting’ service by establishing verbal communication needs using bilingual and multilingual members of staff.  All employees on the CBS register undergo thorough training and assessments before they are allowed to work as Bilingual Service Providers providing oral (spoken) communication.

At present, there are 39 trained and assessed members of staff covering 12 languages.
Those CBS members choosing to further develop their personal interpreting skills will have an opportunity to undertake a course leading to become qualified Public Service Interpreters.

What is Sandwell Interpreters Forum (SIF)?

SIF is an approved Centre for training and examinations for the Institute of Linguists. Through SIF Sandwell Council offers a nationally recognised level course known as Diploma in Public Services Interpreting (DPSI). This is available in three options: Health, Local Government and English Law.
