Child Employment
Control of child employment is exercised under a combination of primary legislation (The Children and Young Persons Act 1933, as amended), The Children (Protection at Work) Regulations 1998 and local authority byelaws.
The current byelaws, by which the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell regulates the conditions for the part-time employment of young people, were made on 25 June 1998 and came into force on 4 August 1998.
Additionally the current regulations for the licensing of children in entertainment also came into force on 4 August 1998. The Education Welfare Service, on behalf of the Local Education Authority, is responsible for ensuring that all young people who undertake part-time employment are properly registered and are not performing tasks or duties which could damage their health or place them in physical or moral danger, or have an adverse affect on their education.
This legislation does not refer to the work carried out by young people who are on works experience which is organised and administered by individual high schools.
