Clerks to the Governing Body

 

Information about clerks to the school governing body.

The role of Clerk to the Governing Body is varied and has a valuable contribution to make to the effective planning, preparation and recording of Governing Body meetings. Their main areas of responsibility are to:

  • send out notices for meetings of the Governing Body
  • prepare the agenda and other papers
  • attend Governing Body meetings to take notes
  • prepare the minutes of those meetings
  • follow up issues arising at Governing Body meetings as required
  • keep records of the membership of the Governing Body
  • deal with correspondence relating to governor appointments/resignations

To assist with the smooth running of meetings it is helpful if the Clerk can provide advice on procedural matters.

After 1 April 2000 no member of the governing body, or the head teacher, may be the clerk to the governing body. The governing body select the clerk but the LA make the formal appointment(except of voluntary aided schools).
