What are School Governors?

All categories of schools in Sandwell have their own Governing Body, which is made up of various types of governors.

In brief Governors Meetings are held each term to discuss issues and decide upon the course of action to take. Governors organise their own work, and as well as the specific tasks given them by law they can consider anything of importance to the school's general well being. They share in formulating the schools aims. They prepare written policies, approve proposals for major changes, or choose among different options for action. They may sometimes have to settle disputes. They are the schools' ambassadors, but also critical friends to monitor its standards of education, efficiency and fairness. In these roles, they may encourage, advise or ward. Occasionally they may have to take firm action to put something right.

Part of school governors' responsibilities are:

  • to agree the School Improvement Plan
  • prepare an action plan following an Ofsted Inspection
  • along with the Head Teacher and LA they are responsible for ensuring that the national curriculum is taught and religious education and collective worship are provided.
  • produce policies on a number of issues including sex education, special needs and charging for school trips etc.
  • set an annual budget detailing planned spending
  • approve a staffing structure
  • write the annual report to parents

Being a governor involves being committed to giving significant amounts of time and energy. Careful consideration of these commitments should be made when agreeing to serve, or to continue to serve, on the governing body of a school.
