Early Professional / Teacher Development
Early professional development (EPD) is a phase of continuing professional development (CPD) undertaken by teachers in the early years of their career.
CPD consists of reflective activities that are designed to improve an individual’s professional attributes, knowledge, understanding and skills. It supports individual needs and improves professional practice.
EPD is defined, in this guidance, as any development activity or intervention that is focused on teachers in the second or third years of their careers.
EPD offers teachers consistency in their professional development from initial teacher training, through induction, into the early teaching years.
On successful completion of induction all teachers become subject to performance management and are entitled to annual reviews and regular feedback on their performance. As part of performance management all teachers should agree developmental objectives with their line managers and receive the training and support they need to achieve them.
