Transfers, Suspensions and Withdrawals

This page will give you an idea of what to expect if you transfer, suspend or withdraw from your course and how your future support may be affected. It would be advisable to read the glossary of terms first.

Transfers

If you change your course and/or institution it will either be a change of mind or a transfer. You will notify us by use of the following forms.

  • CO1 Change of Circumstances for a change of mind. You should complete this yourself.
  • Annex 1 (Transfer) for a transfer. This is completed by your university (or the new university if you are changing universities). You must also confirm your transfer in writing and make a request to us to transfer your support.

If you transfer between the end of the first year and the start of the second year, and you have no previous study, you should receive full fee funding for your new course.

However if you transfer during the second or subsequent years of your course the process becomes much more complicated. You are therefore advised to contact us for further advice.

Please note that your university will most likely approve transfers without making reference to how your entitlement to future support may be affected. It would therefore be advisable to seek our advice beforehand.

Suspensions

A suspension is basically an approved leave of absence from your course. You arrange this with your university and they will notify us of your last date of date of attendance along with your expected return date. We would also advise you to notify us in writing yourself.

When you suspend we will stop your support for the period you will be away from your course. We will also notify you of any loan and supplementary grants you may still be entitled to from 1 September to the date of your suspension if applicable.

If you will not be returning until the following academic year arrangements will be made to forward you an application shortly before you are due to return. You will still be classed as a continuing student.

Withdrawals

The procedure for withdrawing from a course is very similar to that of suspending a course in respect of what you and your university have to do. Once again we will use your last date of attendance (given to us by your university) to calculate any possible loan and supplementary grant entitlement you may have for your time in attendance.

If you return to study a new course, no matter how long after you withdrew, you will be classed as a new student and will have to go through the full new student application process again. Your support for a new course may be affected by your previous study.
