Primary Education
Sandwell has ninety six schools for pupils of primary age. Of these nine are Infant (Key Stage 1) Schools, eight are Junior (Key Stage 2) Schools and 78 are primary schools which have children aged four to eleven years.
In addition to these, Sandwell has two special schools and one pupil referral unit for pupils with specific learning needs. More than three-quarters of Sandwell Primary and Infant Schools have nursery provision. Currently there are four schools with Leading Edge Status.
The work of schools is supported by the Early Years and Childcare Development Partnership and by other initiatives, including Sure Start, Neighbourhood Renewal, New Deal for Communities, Excellence in Cities and the Children’s Fund.
These schools are also grouped into Learning Communities which provide mutual support and share effective learning practices.
Primary Schools are supported by a large and very experienced team of advisers and consultants. Each school has a dedicated School Improvement Partner and all schools are supported by consultants for Early Years, literacy, numeracy and ICT. In addition to these, Sandwell has an ethnic minority achievement team and an excellent music service which serves both Primary and Secondary schools.
Secondary Education
There are thirteen High Schools in Sandwell, three Acadmies and one Collegiate Academy (consisting of two academies). Eight of these have pupils aged 11 to 16, and ten have pupils aged 11 to18.
There is additional post 16 provision through Sandwell College, which has several sites throughout Sandwell. Sandwell is currently reorganising its provision for pupils in the 14 to 19 age range.
Special Education
Schools in Sandwell have an inclusive approach. There are currently four special schools: one secondary Moderate Learning Difficulties school, one secondary and one primary for severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties residential BESD school.
In addition we have 23 schools with LA focus provision. In more detail, six with nurture groups (five primary and one secondary), seven primary and two secondary schools for children with complex communication disorders (ASD).
