The Environmental Health & Trading Standards Division enforces animal health and welfare legislation for both pet animals and livestock. This involves:
- The inspection and licensing of animal boarding establishments, certain dog breeders, dangerous wild animals, riding establishments, pet shops and performing animals.
- The inspection of farm animals to ensure the welfare and disease control of livestock.
- Responding to service requests relating to animal welfare issues, such as cruelty cases, illegal livestock movements and animal nuisances, taking action where necessary and liaising with other animal health bodies.
The Division is regularly involved in liaison with DEFRA and other Local Authorities on animal welfare issues and reacts to outbreaks of notifiable diseases in livestock, such as foot and mouth disease.
