The Independent Living Centre can provide general advice and information about services and opportunities for people with disabilities.
Children with disabilities
We can provide help and advice to families in the borough who have children with disabilities and special needs. This includes children with severe physical, learning or sensory disabilities.
Learning disabilities
We aim to support people with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible in the community, by working with individuals to assess needs and arrange appropriate services. Our Adult Placement Scheme provides residential placements for adults with learning disabilities within a fostering home environment.
Physical disabilities
If you are permanently disabled and experiencing difficulty in using existing facilities in your home because of your disability, we may be able to make adaptions to your home with disability equipment

We can provide services for people who are experiencing difficulties because of a visual impairment. This may include training in the use of special equipment and in learning new skills, social groups, talking newspapers and a range of information provided on cassette tape.
Transport for the disabled
The Blue Badge Scheme provides parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or passengers. The Scheme also applies to registered blind people, and people with very severe upper limb disabilities who regularly drive a vehicle but cannot turn the steering wheel by hand.
Direct payments
We can also arrange access for some people to direct payments so that they can arrange their own services.
Training and employment for adults with disabilities
The Vocational and Employment Service provide vocational training to adults with mental health and learning disabilities, who wish to train in order to enter into employment.
