Older People

Agewell is an organisation formed to promote the health and wellbeing of all older people that live in Sandwell. They work to promote positive images of older people and encourage attitudes of respect towards you, challenging 'ageism', and so enable you to exercise choice and live with dignity and self esteem.

Care and support needs

If you need support or care at home or in the community, or are looking after someone who has care and support needs, there are services that can help you. We will first assess your needs to identify the services you are eligible to receive. To get a care assessment of your needs you should contact your local Adults Team, doctor, district nursing service, or ward staff if you are in hospital. You can find out more about services to support you in the adult social care services section. If you are a carer, there are services to support you too. Visit our carer's section for more information.

Our Better Care, Higher Standards Charter  is for everyone aged 18 or over who needs long-term support because of disability, old age or ill health, and for anyone who is a carer of someone in these circumstances. It sets out the standards that you can expect from the Council's Adult Services and Health, Sandwell Homes and Sandwell Primary Care Trust.

Community Alarms and Telecare

The Community Alarm Service can install an alarm so that you can summon help 24 hours a day in an emergency, such as a fall or collapse at home. Your social worker will assess whether you qualify for an alarm, in which case you will be given financial help towards the cost, or you can buy it privately.

STAY (Sandwell Telecare Assisting You) provides electronic equipment that can make it safer for you, or someone you care for, to live independently at home. There are advances in technology all the time, and you may be surprised to find out what's available.

Direct payments

Adult Services and Health can also arrange for some people to have direct payments so that they can arrange their own support services. We are moving towards a system whereby people will have more choice and control over the services they receive. You can find some more information about this in our Better Care, Higher Standards booklet.

Extra care housing

You may have heard of sheltered housing, but have you heard of extra care housing? It's a new type of housing scheme which you might want to consider if you need, or think you will need, more care and support and want to keep your independence. Find out more about extra care housing.

Independent Living Centre

The Independent Living Centre provides general advice and information about services and opportunities for people with disabilities.

Keeping warm in winter

As the weather gets colder, we are all more likely to catch colds or flu, and if your body tempurature drops then the risks of a heart attack, stroke or breathing difficulties increase. This is especially true for older people, or if you have a chronic disease, or are vulnerable due to a physical disability. Read more about keeping warm in winter.

Community meals

If you are unable to cook or prepare food for yourself you can have a meal delivered to your home through the Community Meals service. A choice of menu is usually available and there are specific meals designed for black and Asian clients and those on special diets.

Protecting vulnerable adults from abuse

The protection of the most vulnerable in our society is critical in allowing all citizens to lead full and independent lives. Read more about protecting vulnerable adults from abuse.
