Housing and Your Home

You may be finding it hard to manage at home and be thinking about moving somewhere where you can get more support and care.

Support at home

We may be able to provide services that will make it possible for you to stay where you live now, rather than having to move. The council aims to support people's independence at home wherever possible and will discuss all the alternatives with you.

Supporting People

Our Supporting People service provides housing-related support. This can include help to manage money, find other services, learn how to cook and clean, or to make friends. However it does not include personal care such as help with washing and dressing.

Supporting People services include:

  • Floating support services where you are visited in your own home.
  • Supported housing schemes for people with disabilities, mental health problems, young adults or people with alcohol or drug problems.
  • Sheltered housing for older people where there are wardens on site to deal with emergencies and make sure that you are safe.

Extra care housing

If you are over 55 you may consider a move to extra care housing. This is self-contained accommodation, with a range of communal facilities on site. If you have support and care needs, there are staff available to help you. All flats have an emergency alarm system. Extra care housing enables older people to retain their independence in a home appropriate to their needs, while having support, security and company.

Care homes

Care homes provide personal care, nursing care or both for people who cannot manage in their own homes. This may include older people, people with disabilities, people with mental ill health. The council runs some care homes, however most are run by private organisations and individual owners.
