St. George's Day

 

Sandwell will lead St. George's Day celebrations again this year with a parade and medieval party in Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich on Sunday 20th April 2008.

Parade

Sandwell Council is joining forces with the Stone Cross St George's Day Association to organise family celebrations under the banner Forever England, For Everybody for the fifth year running.

The St. George's Day Parade leaves Westminster Road at 10.40 am and arrives in Dartmouth Park at 11.45. Please be aware that the streets and parks of Sandwell are "No Alcohol" zones, and organisers urge people not to bring alcohol to the event.

St. George's Day Medieval Party

A medieval knight on horsebackMouthwatering medieval entertainment in Dartmouth Park awaits visitors celebrating the patron saint of England's special day. Events on the day include:

The St. George's Day Medieval Party - Sunday 20th April 2008 between 12.00 and 5.00 pm.

Attractions based on a Medieval theme include:

  • Medieval living history encampments with tentage
  • Jousting Knights
  • Squires
  • Ladies and combat
  • George and Dragon puppet theatre
  • Dressing the Knight
  • Archery with a chance for the public to "Have a Go" and lots more

There will be Morris dancing from Bedcote Morris as well as the traditional Brass Band music provided by Langley Band. Poetry Wednesbury will also be reading their latest literary works.

Car Parking

Car parking is available at West Bromwich Town Centre's car parks (Free on Sundays). These, along with Town Centre's bus station and Metro stop, are just a 5-10 minute walk from Dartmouth Park.

St. George's Concert Wednesday 23rd April

Sandwell Youth Orchestra and the combined Kenrick & Jefferson and Walsall Harmonic Male Voice Choirs will perform a programme of music with an English theme at the St George's Day Concert at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 23rd April.

Tickets, costing £3, are now on sale from Sandwell Youth Music on 0121 569 8502 and Sandwell Cultural Services on 0121 569 8277.

The musical programme will feature music by English composers such as Edward Elgar, William Parry and Eric Coates and will end with a rousing, foot thumping 'Last Night at the Proms' style performance of Pomp & Circumstance and Jerusalem.

Compere for the evening will be Mike Wyer of Smooth Radio.
