Tipton Slasher Statue
The third stop on the Walk Tipton The Tipton Slasher and The Fountain Inn.
This bronze statue was unveiled in 1993 to commemorate William Perry (1820-1880) the Tipton born bare knuckle boxer who was Champion of England from 1850 to 1857.
Perry had originally worked as a canal boatman transporting sewage out to the countryside but by his late teens he had become a nationally known boxing celebrity. He returned to poverty after betting all his possessions on his unsuccessful last fight.
The statue faces the Fountain Inn where the Slasher trained for his fights. The Fountain Inn is now a listed building.
