Adjacent to both the Birmingham New and Old Main Lines, the Galton Valley Canal Heritage Museum in Smethwick is ideally place to explore the local canals and their history.

As well as the museum building on Brasshouse Lane we also look after the New Smethwick Pumping Station and the original site of the famous Smethwick Engine.

It is Free to visit the museum and if you would like to visit the New Smethwick Pumping Station or the Smethwick Engine Site please speak to a member of staff to arrange a time.

As the motorways of their day the canals played a central role in the industrial development of the country.

With its two canals, the Galton Valley shows the development of the canals and the work of three of the major canal engineers, James Brindley, John Smeaton and Thomas Telford.

The Museum hosts a variety of events, talks, guided walks and school holiday activities as well as a schools’ programme.
