Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery

 

A Victorian Art Gallery, housing collections which include fine art paintings, applied art, old toys as well as one of the world's largest collections of Ruskin pottery. This year we are also launching a local history gallery.

The Richards Gallery at WMAG

Our permanent exhibitions include the world famous Ruskin pottery, Old toys and games, Victorian paintings, and we are currently establishing a local history gallery. We also have a varied programme of temporary exhibitions which include work by local artists and national touring exhibitions.Click the link about to find out more.

Our family room and toy gallery also has toys and activites for families to play and interact with and is guaranteed to make all the adults say 'I had one of those'

We have activities and events throughout school holidays and throughout the year.

Due to major construction work being carried out adjacent to the Gallery, car parking is severely limited Monday - Friday. We suggest that until further notice it may be advisable to use the regular metro or bus services which are very close to the Gallery.

There is limited disabled access.

Richard Wattis 1912-1975

Richard Wattis was a famous actor of stage and screen.

Richard Wattis Portrait from the Sandwell Museum Service CollectionHe was born in Hollies Drive, Wednesbury in 1912. In 1916 his family moved to Birmingham Road, Walsall. He attended schools in Walsall, Birmingham and Bromsgrove.

Until the mid 1930s Richard worked at the Sanders Electrical Company in Wednesbury.

Richard Wattis is perhaps best known for his appearances in the St. Trinian film series and other British classics such as Kind Hearts & Coronets and Carry on Spying. He also appeared in Hollywood films such as The Prince & The Showgirl and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Between the 1950s and 1970s he was also to be seen in British television sitcoms and regularly appeared on Hancock’s Half Hour, Father Dear Father and Sykes.

He died on February 1st 1975 after suffering a heart attack.

This portrait was commissioned by Wednesbury Arts Festival in 2004, and was donated to the Sandwell Museum Service Collection. The artist was Gary Morgan.
