Grass Roots
To produce high quality milk our cows need plenty of high quality grass, so a lot of the work on Forge Mill Farm goes into making sure that we have enough to feed our cows all the year round.
Our cows are only in the fields from April to October, because in the Winter months their hooves would just damage the grass. This means that we have to feed them on something else when they are indoors.
Silage is pickled grass, which is cut, left to wilt and then picked up with trailers. When it arrives at the farm it is tipped, before being placed on top of the previous layer and rolled to remove air, which could make it go off.
When the silage clamp is finished it is covered with a sheet to keep air out and left until it is needed when the cows are in the Winter quarters.
