Triple jump world champion Phillips Idowu had a spring in his step at the opening of an Olympic-themed open air sports zone in a Sandwell park.

The adiZone has a large gym, basketball and football area, climbing wall, tennis wall and a freestyle area for aerobics, dance and martial arts.

Built in the shape of the 2012 Olympics logo, the adiZone is the first in the West Midlands and part of adidas' sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The European Athlete of the Year joined excited primary pupils and other guests at the launch of the adiZone in Victoria Park, Smethwick.

Sporting his trademark dyed red hair, Phillips said: “This is a tremendous facility and I hope everyone takes advantage of it by coming down to the park and trying it out.

Why Should I do it?

5 x 30 minutes exercise campaign posterJust 30 minutes a day of activity that makes you warm and breathe faster than normal can reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It improves the quality of your life too!

Recent statistics suggest that seven out of ten adults don’t do enough physical activity and this increases their risk of heart disease. Being physically active not only keeps your heart healthy, but makes you look and feel great.

Moving around, stretching and changing position regularly all help to keep the body mobile and strong. Active choices can use up a lot of calories – which is great for keeping your weight under control.

The good news is that there are many ways to get your daily dose of activity, even if your job involves sitting down all day. So don’t put off doing your daily activity until you’ve finished work. Energise your day with bursts of activity whenever you can.
You can build up to your healthy 30 minutes of activity before, during, or after work. And there are lots of different ways and places to be active in Sandwell, wherever you are: at work, at home, or at leisure
