What Could Happen In An Emergency

If an emergency occurs near your home the Police or other emergency services may advise you to stay indoors or evacuate to a place of safety. Please follow the advice that is given.

If you are advised to stay indoors, you should:

  • Go inside and close all windows and doors, (if you are advised to)
  • Stay indoors until you are given the all clear
  • Tune in to the local radio and/or TV for information on the incident

The ‘Go In, Stay In, Tune In’ slogan refers to a leaflet that was circulated throughout the country by the Government in 2004. To download a copy of the booklet please visit the Preparing for Emergencies website.

Local radio and TV stations may be used to provide you with vital information. These include:

  • BBC Radio WM – 95.6 FM
  • BBC Asian Radio Network – 1458 and 828 AM
  • Heart FM – 100.7 FM
  • BRMB – 96.4 FM
  • Galaxy – 102.2 FM
  • Radio XL – 1296 AM

When an emergency takes place in your area it is a good idea to keep all telephone calls to a minimum to ease pressure on telephone systems, ensuring that the emergency services have priority.

If you are advised to evacuate your home, you should:

  • Gather all family and pets in you household together

    • For further guidance on packing an emergency bag please see our section on Preparing for Emergencies
  • You may be advised to go to a place of safety and shelter known to us as a  reception or rest centre. If you decide not to go to the reception or rest centre, please inform the police, one of the local authority evacuation officers assisting or a neighbour who is going to the centre, make sure they know your name, full address, where you have gone and how you can be contacted
  • Use whatever transport is provided or recommended
  • If you are aware that anyone in the area to be evacuated has special needs, tell the police or council officers supervising the evacuation
