Transport and Streets

 

The maintenance and utilisation of the 'Transport and Streets' in Sandwell is the responsibility of a number of Divisions of the Council in partnership with other various bodies and organisations.

West Bromwich Road Network Sandwell's responsibilities cover (in part):

  • 750 km (approx 500 miles) of road
  • 1500 km (approx 1000 miles) of footway
  • 29000 street lights 62 sets of traffic lights
  • 108 pelican crossings
  • 856000 square metres of grass verge
  • 20000 street trees
  • 230 bridges and other structures
  • 18000 road gullies

The maintenance of the condition of Sandwell's highway network is important in contributing to efficient travel and supporting a sustainable economy. The condition of the highway may also have an influence on general road safety and health linked the number of potential accidents. An annual highway maintenance programme strives to ensure that road deterioration is kept to a minimum by employing well-designed preventative maintenance systems.

To facilitate the level of maintenance and renewal of the boroughs highway, the Council is required to work toward achieving targets set in the West Midlands Local Transport Plan 2000. Sandwell's performance, along with its neighbouring authorities, is then monitored on an annual basis.

Examples of the targets included within the plan are to:

  • Reduce the percentage of life expired roads on the Principal Road Network
  • Increase cycle usage to 5%
  • Increase AM peak bus speeds to 25km per hour
  • Produce of a walking strategy
