Sandwell Council, along with all local authorities, has powers to protect trees considered to be of visual amenity to the local area.

To ensure the future of such trees, Preservation Orders are made.

Trees are important for many reasons that go beyond making places appear more attractive. They provide valuable habitats for wildlife, improve the air we breathe, help to conserve energy in nearby buildings and much more.

The Council keeps records of all Tree Preservation Orders within Sandwell, details of every tree which is preserved, every application under the order and the authoritys decision in relation to each such application.  If individuals would like information on a tree/trees within the curtilage of a property was protected, please email byron_clews@sandwell.gov.uk for more details.

All trees in Conservation Areas are protected, a record of these is also kept. Please e-mail for more information.

If you want to carry out work on a tree or trees and are unsure as to whether they are the subject of a Preservation Order or are within a Conservation Area, then please e-mail us and we will advise you accordingly.

It is an offence to carry out work on a protected tree without permission.

If you wilfully damage such a tree then you could be prosecuted and fined up to £20,000.

If you see a tree, which is unsafe, or believe unauthorised tree work is being carried out, then please email or call with the details.
