The junction of the A4123 Birmingham New Road with the A461 Birmingham Burnt Tree lies on the Sandswell - Dudley boundary approximately 2.5 miles west of junction 2 of the M5 Motorway.
It is a relatively small roundabout with lots of conflicting vehicle movements and no facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. This results in a congested junction with a poor accident record. There have been 20 injury accidents at the junction over the last 3 years, 2 of which were fatal.
Dudley and Sandwell Councils have jointly developed a scheme to replace the existing five-arm roundabout, with a four-arm traffic signal junction. Tividale Road would be diverted into a new junction on Birmingham New Road. The scheme aims to:-
- Improve pedestrian and cycle routes through the junction.
- Reduce delays for bus services running through the junction.
- Improve road safety for all junction users.
- Reduce overall congestion at the junction.
