School and Young Persons Travel

Targets have been introduced as part of the Local Transport Plan to reduce the number of school related trips on the road.

Alternative means of travel are therefore promoted to encourage students at both primary and secondary schools to use more sustainable modes, other than the single occupancy car. Schools within the borough now have to devise a School Travel Plan (STP) in order to achieve a modal shift, where other means of travel are emphasised as reliable, safe and convenient. Sandwell has 116 schools, many of which have already established their own school travel plan.

As young people lack their own form of private transport, walking, cycling and public transport are the main forms of travel available to them.

School Travel Plans have the objective of making the younger generation aware that alternative forms of transport can be just as effective as the single occupancy car, therefore encouraging them to walk, cycle and use public transport in later life.
