Canals

Information on local canals in Sandwell, including history, attractions, leisure facilities and local organisations.

Photograph of canal in Smethwick Sandwell's canal network developed between 1769 and the 1870's, to provide transport to the developing industries of Birmingham and the Black Country. Much of this network is still open to navigation.

Sandwell has a comprehensive network of canals; which retain a legacy of excellent and early examples of canalside architecture: bridges, aqueducts, cuttings and industrial buildings; wildlife rich corridors and ample leisure opportunities.

Sandwell's canals are in the process of regeneration through the efforts of British Waterways, the Council, Groundwork Black Country, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), local interest groups and initiatives such as Canals for Communities.

The Galton Valley Canal Heritage Centre, Brasshouse Lane, Smethwick provides further information on the history and wildlife of the Canal Network in Sandwell, together with events, trail guides and information on leisure activities.
